I’m now seeing the draw request steps it says roof has to be paid in full before they release funds?? I thought the point of this was the Grant paying for the roof but it sounds like I’m now having to front the money? Am I reading this right?

Hi Rhonda,
The Program does not provide a list of recommended Contractors. The choice of who you work with is completely up to you as the homeowner.
A helpful way to start is to ask people you trust—like family, friends, neighbors, or co‑workers—if they have had similar work done and can recommend someone. Hearing about their own experiences is often the best way to find someone reliable.
You can also look at online reviews on places like Google, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, Angi, or HomeAdvisor. These sites can help you see how other people felt about the company’s work.
Additionally, there is a portion of the website that has some contact information, tips, and best practices:

Hi John,
It is a requirement to show proof of homeowner's insurance as a part of the Grant Application. You might consider contracting local county programs or state housing programs, as they may have different eligibility requirements.

I do not have Homeowners Insurance. I am on a fixed income and can not afford it. Can I still apply for a low income grant? If so how?

For Homeowners approved for “Low-Income” Grants, payment is not reimbursement-based, and proof of full payment is not required before Disbursement. Once a Draw Request is approved, Homeowners can receive a check for eligible completed work up to the maximum allowance. Applicants should manage Contractor relationships and share program details and expectations before any work agreements, as Contractors may have their own business practices.

Does these mean that I have to pay for the work done to my house, then MSFH will reimburse me. I'm a low-income grandmother. I cannot afford any upfront money.

There are two types of Hurricane Mitigation Grants: 1) Matching Grants and 2) Low-Income Grants.
Matching Grants
The My Safe Fl Home Matching Grant operates on a reimbursement basis. At the end of the application process, payment is requested by submitting a Draw Request. A paid-in-full invoice must be provided with the Draw Request. If the Draw Request is approved, Homeowners will be reimbursed for up to two-thirds of the total construction costs, with a maximum state contribution of $10,000, subject to legislative appropriation and available funds.
Low-Income Grant
The My Safe FL Home Low-Income Grant offers payment directly to the Homeowner to cover actual costs of Recommended Improvements completed by the Contractor. At the end of the application process, payment is requested by submitting a Draw Request. During the Draw Request process, a paid-in-full invoice is not required to be submitted under this grant program. If the Draw Request is approved, Homeowners will receive a check for the actual cost of mitigation work up to the maximum grant allowance of $10,000, subject to legislative appropriation.
