Improvement 1.0 - Opening Protection

Modified on Fri, 6 Mar at 1:42 PM

Protecting the openings on your home—like exterior doors, garage doors, windows, and skylights—with impact‑rated products can help stop flying debris from breaking through and causing pressure inside your home.

Please contact your insurance company to ask if you need an A1, A2, or A3 rating to get any discounts. You should also look at your Initial Inspection Report to see which openings on your home need to be improved.

Based on this improvement type, an Applicant may be recommended to do the following:

  1. Install impact-rated windows or shutters. If you already have hurricane compliant shutters that meet, you cannot get funding to replace those openings with impact windows. A home with compliant shutters already has mitigation against hurricane damage. The Grant cannot be used to exchange one type of protection for another.
  2. Install impact-rated exterior doors or garage doors. Entry or garage doors that include glass are referred to as “glazed” openings, whereas solid entry or garage doors with no glass are referred to as “non-glazed” openings.

You do not have to replace every opening to receive grant funding. You may choose certain openings to upgrade, as long as those openings are listed in your Initial Inspection Report.

Townhouses are only eligible to receive funding for Improvement 1.0 – Opening Protection. Single-family homes that are attached to other units will be treated as townhouses for the purposes of the My Safe FL Home Program.
